Monday's Meeting (1/30)


On Monday, January 30th we will be joined by a Young Grad Panel, with recent graduates Devin Hughes, Kelsey Spellman and Stephanie Lipcsick. We also will be having our VP of Member Relations elections. Read more about our Young Grad Panel members below:

Devin Hughes: Devin Hughes graduated magna cum laude from Ohio University in 2011 with a degree in public relations. Hughes was a member of PRSSA and ImPRessions all four of his years at the University, ultimately serving as CEO of ImPRessions, as well as sitting on the PRSSA executive board for two years. In 2011, he was honored with an Award of Excellence for "Outstanding Graduate" from Central Ohio PRSA, as well as the "Outstanding PR Graduate" award from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Currently, Hughes is an assistant account executive at Landau Public Relations, a PR agency in Cleveland, Ohio. Hughes has a wide range of communications experience, spanning the health care, corporate, agency and higher education sectors. His various duties have ranged from public relations, public affairs, community relations and internal communications. After enjoying a summer internship with PR agency Fleishman-Hillard, Hughes decided to pursue a full-time position in the agency world, happily landing with Landau.


Kelsey Spellman: Kelsey Spellman graduated from Ohio University in 2011 with a degree in public relations and a minor in Spanish. Kelsey was a member of both ImPRessions and PRSSA during her time at OU. She served as president of PRSSA her senior year. Currently, Kelsey is an assistant account executive at Landau Public Relations, a PR agency in Cleveland, Ohio. At Landau, Kelsey serves on B2B, B2C and non-profit accounts, working with clients such as Things Remembered, Purple America and Kichler Lighting. She serves on both the scholarship committee and young professionals committee for the Greater Cleveland chapter of PRSA and is also a member of Cleveland 20/30, a young professionals organization in Cleveland. Kelsey will go to her grave arguing that Ohio University is the greatest place in the world and challenges anyone to find a more beautiful, outrageous and exciting place to live for four years other than Athens, Ohio. 


Stephanie Lipcsik: Stephanie Lipcsik was a June 2011 graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism with a PR major and business administration minor. While at OU, she completed internships with Ohio University Libraries and the Miss Universe Organization. Upon graduation, she accepted a job with Aerotek, one of the largest privately-held staffing firms in the county. Here, she specializes in recruiting for professional services positions within the Columbus, Ohio market.  In her free time, she likes to shop, watch movies and hike.

#OhioU Social Media Summit speaker spotlight: Kelly Malone

Kelly Malone joins the #OhioU Social Media Summit to show us how we can use social media to get a job. Malone will lead the final advanced panel.

Malone is an account supervisor at Fahlgren MortineThe social relations specialist helps CPG, education, healthcare and tourism clients connect with audiences in meaningful ways online. She has developed social campaigns, managed online communities and provided social media training for clients including Balloon Time, Elmer’s, Experience Columbus, Inter-University Council, Ohio Tourism Division, Stanley Steemer and the West Virginia Lottery. Before entering the agency world, Kelly led public relations and marketing at one of the top real estate firms in the Midwest, helping the company and its agents become pioneers in the social space. Kelly is a graduate of The Ohio State University and serves as a professional advisor to the OSU PRSSA chapter.

Internships, Jobs and Opportunities 1/25/12

Internship with Chick-fil-A Bowl
The Chick-fil-A Bowl is seeking candidates for four paid internships ($1,260/ month) for the 2012 college football season (Jun 25, 2012 - January 31, 2013) in Atlanta. Interns will help plan and execute two Chick-fil-A Kickoff Games featuring the University of Tennessee vs. North Carolina State University and Auburn University vs. Clemson University. Qualified applicants should be sports-minded, self-motivators who are willing to accept the long hours and hard work required to succeed in the sports industry and should be committed to pursue a career in the business of athletics. Fahlgren Mortine Founder's Award
Fahlgren Mortine is now accepting applications for the 2012 Founder's Award, which includes a paid, full-time summer internship and a $2000 scholarship. Additionally, interns will receive $12/ hour to work Monday-Friday from 8:30-5. Candidate must be a full-time student currently in his/ her sophomore or junior year of college. Preference is given to PR, communications and journalism majors, although all are considered. Ideally, candidates will have strong research, organizational and writing skills; a proven understanding of PR, social media, online and traiditonal media (including AP Style); talent, drive and ability to work independently and in team settings; and have previous internship experience. NSAC opportunity for PRSSA
Ohio University Advertising Association has gotten the ball rolling with this year's Nissan campaign. The club is to administer an entirely fresh, innovative campaign that captures Millennials and multiculturals. The PR and promotions team has kicked off with some great ideas and collaboration, but would greatly appreciate more opinions and ideas as the campaign progresses. This is a large, exciting campaign and the more minds working together, the better. The experience is greatly valuable in the workplace, internships and interviews, and the campaign itself will serve as a portfolio piece for active participants. Many words can describe Mary: Community manager. Reputation shaper. Gamer. Reader. Gardener. But one word that can’t? Apathetic. Her passion for her work, her clients and her family (including her two Westies, Izzy and Louie) is seemingly limitless. Mary earned her Bachelor’s in Journalism from Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College and Scripps School of Journalism. Before working as a Senior Account Executive at Fahlgren Mortine, Mary worked at SBC Advertising, managing the PR and online initiatives for several clients including Ohio Tuition Trust Authority, Premier HealthNet, Good Samaritan Hospital, Krazy Glue and Stanley Steemer.

Monday's Meeting (1/23)

Hello PRSSA members,
 
We hope you had a great Dad’s Weekend! If you are interested in the ins and outs of the sports world, then tomorrow’s meeting is one that you don't want to miss.

At our meeting tomorrow (January 23) we will be hearing from Todd Sharrock, the vice president of public relations for the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Sharrock originally joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as director of communications in February 2000 and was named executive director of communications in July 2005.  He oversees the club’s communications and community relations departments, including media relations, publications, player relations, as well as editorial content on the club’s website and social media platforms.

Sharrock came to Columbus after spending five seasons with the Houston Aeros, joining the expansion International Hockey League club in 1994 and serving as the director of communications through the 1998-99 season.  He also previously served as a media relations consultant for Houston NFL Holdings LLC. 

Sharrock has also served as the assistant director of public relations for the NHL’s Dallas Stars during the 1993-94 season.  He began his career as director of public relations with the Dallas Freeze of the Central Hockey League in 1992. 

Sharrock earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in sport management from The Ohio State University. He currently serves on the Board of Commissioners for the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and is a member of the National Hockey League Public Relations Advisory Council.

Internships, Jobs and Opportunities 1/18/12

Paid Marketing/ PR Internship with the Ohio State Fair
The Ohio State Fair is looking for interns who will work Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for 14 weeks in May, June and July (school schedules taken into consideration). Interns will work in shifts of Saturdays, July 14 and 21. During the 12 days of the Fair, which will be July 25 - August 5, extended hours are required to at least 14-hour shifts. Applicants must have at least three years of college education in PR, communications and / or journalism are best qualified. Computer skills are a must; desktop publishing experience is a plus. Candidates should have experience writing news releases, organizing events, pitching stories and designing and writing newsletters and brochures. Summer Internship at Landau PR
Landau Public Relations is now accepting applications for The Landau Summer Experience. Interested students must have completed their junior year and be in sound academic standing with a passion to learn more about the industry. The program will give students a hands-on experience at a PR agency and there will be many opportunities for portfolio building with solid writing examples and real results. Central Ohio PRSA Match Day

Registration is now open for this year's Central Ohio PRSA Match Day, which will be held on Thursday, February 16. Match day is an opportunity for PRSSA members to connect with professionals in a specific career field. The professional will have a chance to share their career experiences and provide advice on what it takes to succeed in the PR industry. The PRSSA member and professional will spend part of the day together at the professional's work and then attend the COPRSA luncheon together that day. Paid Writing Internships with the Office of Research Communications

The Office of Research Communications is seeking students to start immediately who can cover faculty and student research, scholarship and creative activity at Ohio University. Stories will be primarily for the web, with some opportunity for print publication. Each position is 10 hours/ week through early June and pays $7.70/ hour. #OhioU Social Media Summit speaker spotlight: Tommy Redmond and Courtney Cooper

We have ingrained the word “SEO” slowly into our expansive vocabularies. Do you really know how to effectively manage SEO or how it affects the digital realm? Tommy Redmond, SEO Manager at Webbed Marketing will pique your interest and hone your SEO ability as he hosts the second advanced session during Ohio University’s #OhioU Social Media Summit.

The Ohio State University graduate develops, manages and monitors the organic search engine optimization strategies for Webbed Marketing’s top accounts, including several Fortune 500 companies. His latest addition to the SEO maze was the development of an algorithm to evaluate inbound linking.

Prior to his management position and after earning a degree in English, Tommy went from a freelance writer into leading Webbed Marketing’s copywriting team. He led with a strong focus on creating content for inbound marketing efforts such as content marketing programs, online PR and social media and online advertising campaigns.

Although he continues to track search engine trends, new interests reside in how user behavior in social media functions as a signal and tool to rank and evaluate content, particularly in local markets. After graduation, she journeyed to work overseas in London, England. Once she arrived back in the states, she utilized her professional network and set herself upon her ideal career path.
