All,
I found this article, "37 Ideas to Grow Your Job Search Network Right Now," which seems highly appropriate given tonight's discussion.
Two thoughts: 1) Don't be overwhelmed by the list, choose a few and focus on them and 2) start now so that you won't be scrambling to have a network when it's time for informational and job interviews.

These are some great tips. Students and young professions really need to build brand YOU. Because, basically, you're "selling" your brand, what it has accomplished, what it can accomplish, etc., to potential employers.
Here are some tips for building brand YOU:
-Buy a URL that reflects your name (like leefreedman.net or leejfreedman.com) and set up a simple site with a free content management tool like Wordpress. Buying the URL is about $10 a year and hosting the site is about $4 a month.
-Set up a professional e-mail address associated with your URL (like lee@leefreedman.net). Utilize this address as your primary form of communication with potential employers. You can set it up so a copy of all incoming e-mails are also sent to another e-mail address, so you can always know when someone is e-mailing you.
-Post your resume on the site.
-Post samples of your work. These can be projects from classes, clips from internships, etc.
-Set up a blog. Make regular posts about your life as it relates to the profession you seen. Post links to other blogs that interest you. Don't worry if no one comments on your blog. The important thing is that you have information populated when a potential employer or references visits your site.
I personally use Wordpress and it's hosted with GoDaddy. GoDaddy makes it somewhat simple to set up a Wordpress site. You may need some help and you can find it with a lot of online resources.
Good luck!
