Fahlgren Mortine Edward Howard Legacy Internship
The competitive Edward Howard Legacy Internship is offered in the Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio offices of Fahlgren Mortine. It is a paid, full-time internship where interns are introduced to all aspects of public relations, including strategic planning, research, media relations, social media engagement, writing, internal communications, special events and online communications. The candidate must be a full-time student currently in his/her sophomore or junior year of college and while preference is given to public relations, communications and journalism majors, all applicants will be considered. Additionally, applicants should posses strong research, organizational and writing skills; a proven understanding of public relations, social media and online and traditional media, including AP style; and have the talent, drive, and ability to work independently and in team settings. Internships with City Parks Foundation in NYC
The City Parks Foundation in NYC is now accepting applications for its summer 2012 Marketing & Communications and Photography internships. Applicants for both positions must be available for approximately 25 hrs/ week and have a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends with the ability to travel to off-site events. Communications interns will assist with some general office tasks as well as have marketing, publicity and social media duties. Photography interns will have the opportunity to photograph a variety of programs produced by the City Parks Foundation. Nominations for this year’s Leadership Awards are being accepted through February 24. Students can nominate themselves or be nominated by another student, faculty, or staff member. Selected finalists will be invited to the Leadership Awards Gala on May 23, where the award recipients will be announced. In today’s competitive job market, standing out from the crowd has become at once more important, and more difficult, than ever. Long gone are the days of just submitting a simple resume and standing out. Now, the way to maintain high marketability is to use online resources such as online resumes and portfolios. By using the Internet to promote yourself, you provide easier access to employers who can stay up to date on what you are doing and see everything with the simple click of a link. Emily Keyes and Stephanie Lipcsik, recruiters from Aerotek, will be speaking on the importance of online resumes and portfolios at the #OhioU Social Media Summit.

Emily Keyes started with Aerotek in 2008 as a Scientific recruiter, and then moved into an Internal Recruiting position in 2010. She currently lives in Columbus, OH and recruits for all the Aerotek offices in Ohio and in Michigan. She will celebrate four years with the company in June.

Stephanie Lipcsik graduated from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in June 2011 and majored in public relations with a minor in business administration. While at OU, she completed internships for the Miss Universe Organization and the Ohio University Libraries. Upon graduation, Stephanie started with Aerotek in June 2011 as a professional services recruiter.

Devin Hughes: Devin Hughes graduated magna cum laude from Ohio University in 2011 with a degree in public relations. Hughes was a member of PRSSA and ImPRessions all four of his years at the University, ultimately serving as CEO of ImPRessions, as well as sitting on the PRSSA executive board for two years. In 2011, he was honored with an Award of Excellence for "Outstanding Graduate" from Central Ohio PRSA, as well as the "Outstanding PR Graduate" award from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Currently, Hughes is an assistant account executive at Landau Public Relations, a PR agency in Cleveland, Ohio. Hughes has a wide range of communications experience, spanning the health care, corporate, agency and higher education sectors. His various duties have ranged from public relations, public affairs, community relations and internal communications. After enjoying a summer internship with PR agency Fleishman-Hillard, Hughes decided to pursue a full-time position in the agency world, happily landing with Landau.

Kelsey Spellman: Kelsey Spellman graduated from Ohio University in 2011 with a degree in public relations and a minor in Spanish. Kelsey was a member of both ImPRessions and PRSSA during her time at OU. She served as president of PRSSA her senior year. Currently, Kelsey is an assistant account executive at Landau Public Relations, a PR agency in Cleveland, Ohio. At Landau, Kelsey serves on B2B, B2C and non-profit accounts, working with clients such as Things Remembered, Purple America and Kichler Lighting. She serves on both the scholarship committee and young professionals committee for the Greater Cleveland chapter of PRSA and is also a member of Cleveland 20/30, a young professionals organization in Cleveland. Kelsey will go to her grave arguing that Ohio University is the greatest place in the world and challenges anyone to find a more beautiful, outrageous and exciting place to live for four years other than Athens, Ohio.

Stephanie Lipcsik: Stephanie Lipcsik was a June 2011 graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism with a PR major and business administration minor. While at OU, she completed internships with Ohio University Libraries and the Miss Universe Organization. Upon graduation, she accepted a job with Aerotek, one of the largest privately-held staffing firms in the county. Here, she specializes in recruiting for professional services positions within the Columbus, Ohio market. In her free time, she likes to shop, watch movies and hike.

Kelly Malone joins the #OhioU Social Media Summit to show us how we can use social media to get a job. Malone will lead the final advanced panel.

Malone is an account supervisor at Fahlgren Mortine. The social relations specialist helps CPG, education, healthcare and tourism clients connect with audiences in meaningful ways online. She has developed social campaigns, managed online communities and provided social media training for clients including Balloon Time, Elmer’s, Experience Columbus, Inter-University Council, Ohio Tourism Division, Stanley Steemer and the West Virginia Lottery. Before entering the agency world, Kelly led public relations and marketing at one of the top real estate firms in the Midwest, helping the company and its agents become pioneers in the social space. Additionally, interns will receive $12/ hour to work Monday-Friday from 8:30-5. Candidate must be a full-time student currently in his/ her sophomore or junior year of college. NSAC opportunity for PRSSA
Ohio University Advertising Association has gotten the ball rolling with this year's Nissan campaign. The club is to administer an entirely fresh, innovative campaign that captures Millennials and multiculturals. The PR and promotions team has kicked off with some great ideas and collaboration, but would greatly appreciate more opinions and ideas as the campaign progresses. This is a large, exciting campaign and the more minds working together, the better. The experience is greatly valuable in the workplace, internships and interviews, and the campaign itself will serve as a portfolio piece for active participants. We hope you had a great Dad’s Weekend! If you are interested in the ins and outs of the sports world, then tomorrow’s meeting is one that you don't want to miss.

At our meeting tomorrow (January 23) we will be hearing from Todd Sharrock, the vice president of public relations for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sharrock originally joined the Columbus Blue Jackets as director of communications in February 2000 and was named executive director of communications in July 2005. He oversees the club’s communications and community relations departments, including media relations, publications, player relations, as well as editorial content on the club’s website and social media platforms.

Sharrock came to Columbus after spending five seasons with the Houston Aeros, joining the expansion International Hockey League club in 1994 and serving as the director of communications through the 1998-99 season. He also previously served as a media relations consultant for Houston NFL Holdings LLC.

Sharrock has also served as the assistant director of public relations for the NHL’s Dallas Stars during the 1993-94 season. He began his career as director of public relations with the Dallas Freeze of the Central Hockey League in 1992.

Sharrock earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in sport management from The Ohio State University. He currently serves on the Board of Commissioners for the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and is a member of the National Hockey League Public Relations Advisory Council.

Paid Marketing/ PR Internship with the Ohio State Fair
The Ohio State Fair is looking for interns who will work Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for 14 weeks in May, June and July (school schedules taken into consideration). Interns will work in shifts of Saturdays, July 14 and 21. During the 12 days of the Fair, which will be July 25 - August 5, extended hours are required to at least 14-hour shifts. Applicants must have at least three years of college education in PR, communications and / or journalism are best qualified. Computer skills are a must; desktop publishing experience is a plus. Candidates should have experience writing news releases, organizing events, pitching stories and designing and writing newsletters and brochures. Summer Internship at Landau PR
Landau Public Relations is now accepting applications for The Landau Summer Experience. Interested students must have completed their junior year and be in sound academic standing with a passion to learn more about the industry. The program will give students a hands-on experience at a PR agency and there will be many opportunities for portfolio building with solid writing examples and real results. Central Ohio PRSA Match Day
Registration is now open for this year's Central Ohio PRSA Match Day, which will be held on Thursday, February 16. Match day is an opportunity for PRSSA members to connect with professionals in a specific career field. The professional will have a chance to share their career experiences and provide advice on what it takes to succeed in the PR industry. The PRSSA member and professional will spend part of the day together at the professional's work and then attend the COPRSA luncheon together that day. We have ingrained the word “SEO” slowly into our expansive vocabularies. Do you really know how to effectively manage SEO or how it affects the digital realm? Tommy Redmond, SEO Manager at Webbed Marketing will pique your interest and hone your SEO ability as he hosts the second advanced session during Ohio University’s #OhioU Social Media Summit.

The Ohio State University graduate develops, manages and monitors the organic search engine optimization strategies for Webbed Marketing’s top accounts, including several Fortune 500 companies. His latest addition to the SEO maze was the development of an algorithm to evaluate inbound linking.

Prior to his management position and after earning a degree in English, Tommy went from a freelance writer into leading Webbed Marketing’s copywriting team. #OhioU Social Media Summit speaker spotlight: Nate Riggs

The #OhioU Social Media Summit aims to inform and assist all journalism students with their professional social media use. For those more comfortable with social media, PRSSA will offer a series of advanced panels. Launching this series is Nate Riggs, who will discuss emerging social media platforms.

Riggs is a content marketing and community management strategist and Director of Social Business at The Karcher Group. The Karcher Group provides web marketing, web development and data services to clients. Among the company’s services are search engine optimization, blogging, website construction and web hosting. For the past 10 years, Riggs has advised mid-sized and large organizations such as Bob Evans Farms, Scotts Miracle-Gro, Bayer Animal Health, Ohio University and many others on leveraging brand story-telling and conversational marketing across the web to effectively reach consumers and to retain their attention. He also has founded Team Cbus, a content marketing production team.

Riggs writes an internationally read social business blog. The site, nateriggs.com, earns more than 25,000 hits monthly. In addition, he regularly contributes to Content Marketing Institute, Chief Content Office Magazine, Spin Sucks Pro, and his opinions have been quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Ohio News Network, Business First and USA Today. #OhioU Social Media Summit speaker spotlight: Erin Pope

The #OhioU Social Media Summit is quickly approaching! Erin Pope will speak at the event, along with co-worker Hanna Balla, about how to appropriatly connect with professionals via social media. This is one of three "begginner" sessions offered at the summit. Read on to learn more about Erin.

Erin is a Media Relations Specialist at Nationwide Children's Hospital where she coordinates media interviews with local, regional and national media, writes news materials, escorts media on the hospital campus and manages Nationwide Children’s online News Room.

Prior to joining the Marketing and PR department at Nationwide Children's, Erin worked at Fahlgren Mortine Public Relations where she supported a variety of clients including Kroger, Donatos Pizza, Cardinal Health and the Franklin Park Conservatory. She graduated from Ohio Dominican University in 2009 and previously interned with Riverside Methodist Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Columbus Radio Group and Irvin Public Relations, where she gained experience in media relations and event management.

She is a founding member and past president of Ohio Dominican University Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter and a member of Delta Sigma Pi. We hope that you had a great Winter break. For our first meeting of Winter quarter we will be hearing from Katie Ronske, the communications assistant at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium hosts more than two million visitors annually and was named the #1 Zoo in America by USA Travel Guide.

In her position, Katie assists the Community Engagement team with public relations, media relations and social media functions for the Zoo as well as Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf Club and the Wilds.

Katie is a 2009 Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism graduate. During her time at OU, she was a member of PRSSA and ImPRessions and interned with Ohio University Department of Communications and Marketing and O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. Before joining the Community Engagement Team at the Zoo, Katie held positions with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Residential Finance Corporation.

Tomorrow (11/14) is the last Scripps PRSSA meeting of Fall quarter. We will be hearing from Kristen Spirko, PR Coordinator for the Miss Universe Organization. Kristen will be speaking about working in the entertainment PR industry.

Kristen is a dynamic, top performing public relations professional with 2+ years of experience in the field. She has worked on customized PR strategies with national and international press, secured hundreds of media placements within leading programs and

publications, and headed large-scale events and stunts generating millions of media impressions around the world.

Kristen joined the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) in 2009 and has been instrumental in developing and maintaining the image of MISS UNIVERSE®, MISS USA® and MISS TEEN USA® brands. Since joining the team at MUO, Kristen has served as an on-site media liaison at the organization’s three annual pageants all over the world, most recently in São Paulo, Brazil. Kristen’s role in the public relations department includes managing 160+ media crews at promotional events, securing international television, print, radio and interactive media coverage, drafting and distributing press materials, organizing red carpet events, media training contestants and handling crisis communications on behalf of the organization.

Kristen attended Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelors degree in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. Kristen currently resides in Weehawken, New Jersey and continues to live by the philosophy: “Love what you do. Do what you love.”

Meeting Recap 10/17: Media Relations Panel

On Monday October 17^th Scripps PRSSA hosted a media relations panel of three distinguished individuals: Stephanie Busack from Express, Kevin Kemper, editorial specialist from SBC Advertising and Ryan Ankrom, senior account executive at SBC Advertising.

It was interesting to hear all of the panelists’ views about the PR world. Kemper had a unique view of PR. Previously being a journalist, he discussed how he formerly had a negative view of PR, and how that view has changed now that he works in the business.

The panelists highly recommended gaining experience from being part of OU’s student-run PR firm ImPRessions and completing internships. Ryan talked about how to make the best impression in an internship. He said to always ask what you can do. “Don’t be the guy sitting with his hood up typing on the computer,” he said. Busack added that if you’re asked a tough question that you don’t know the answer to, “admit that you don’t know the answer but say, I’ll look that up for you!”

The panelists also had many tips on landing an internship or a job. All three of them put an emphasis on managing your online presence saying that you are your own brand, so manage your brand accordingly.

Besides keeping your online profile and timeline up to par, the professionals discussed what students should do in school to help prepare for the professional world. Kemper recommended taking as many writing classes as possible. Ryan stressed the importance of knowing how a newsroom works. “Understand how the different newsrooms work, and understand how bloggers work and what’s important to them,” he said. “Understanding the different roles in the newsroom will put you light years ahead.”

Another tip from the panelists was to make as many connections with people along the way. The trio all agreed that having connections with people is the best and easiest way to communicate with the media and future employers. Kevin stated, “Work your relationships as much as possible.”

Meeting Recap 10/24: Rebecca Odell

On October 24^th PR professional Rebecca Odell treated Scripps PRSSA to her expertise in Public Relations. Odell discussed what a PR professional does on a day-to-day basis. Odell began her speech by stating that PR is “one of the most misunderstood professions on the planet.”

Odell is currently employed at Big Red Rooster, a retail innovation firm in Columbus, Ohio. She claims that PR is ever changing, “When I walk into work I don't know what I'm going to be doing.” Odell discussed that perhaps that is why most people find PR so intriguing,"PR isn't just about throwing a message out there and hoping someone catches onto it,” she said. “It's a two-way street... everything we do, say, and tweet has strategy behind it."

Odell said that our generation has grown up with social media and connecting to people in an instant, so we should use this to an advantage. She defined PR as “a planned process to influence public opinion, through sound character and proper performance, based on mutually satisfactory two-way communication.”

Odell's specialties include social media, event planning, media relations, marketing and advertising, along with numerous others. "There are so many areas of public relations and work environments you can work in," she said. Some of the areas that she named were nonprofits, corporations, agencies, entertainment and government. Odell proclaimed that when looking for a job, “don't be afraid to be non-traditional.”

Some of Odell’s tips for success were to: take writing seriously, complete several internships, and use social media as your competitive advantage. Odell left everyone with one last piece of advice. After completing an internship or interview, “always, always, always write a thank-you note, not a thank-you email, but a thank-you card,” she said.

We hope you had a great “HallOUween” weekend. For our meeting tomorrow night we will be hearing from Dr. Stephen Iseman.

Iseman is an APR (Accredited in Public Relations), a PRSA member, a retired Professor of Communication Arts/Public Relations and Director of the Public Relations Program at Ohio Northern University. He served as the faculty advisor for Ohio Northern’s award winning PRSSA chapter for 18 years.

Iseman has an impressive public relations background. He has served on numerous Central Ohio PRSA committees and is a past president of the chapter. In addition, he has been an ex officio member of the National PRSA Educators Academy Board of Directors, a reviewer for PRSA’s Certification for Education in Public Relations program, the National Faculty Advisor for the Public Relations Students Society of America and a past National Co-Chair of PRSA’s Educational Affairs Committee. He is currently a member of the National Board of Directors of the PRSA and serves as the PRSA Board Liaison with the PRSSA National Committee. Prior to teaching, Iseman worked in public relations for over 20 years. During the summer of 2007 served as the first “Professor in Residence” for Fahlgren Mortine Public Relations in Columbus.

Iseman has won numerous awards, his most recent being the 2011 Teahan for Outstanding Chapter advisor. Other honors include the 2004 “Walt Seifert Award for Outstanding Service to PRSA, Ohio Magazine’s 2006 “Excellence in Education Award,” the 2008 “Tom Poling Practitioner of the Year Award" and the 2009 "Outstanding Educator Award" from PRSA.

Stephanie Busack is a 2005 Ohio University E.W. Scripps School of Journalism graduate. Since graduating, she was worked for Time Warner Cable, The Columbus Dispatch and Bob Evans. She is a current interactive marketing specialist for Express. Her job duties include: managing social media and mobile programs that drive a significant amount of traffic and visits to m.express.com. In 2009, she earned her Masters in Communication & Marketing from Franklin University located in Columbus, Ohio. Stephanie also manages her own on-line portfolio www.sbusack.com/.

Kevin Kemper is a 1999 graduate from Ohio University. Kemper is a former newspaper reporter with more than 10 years of experience covering Ohio businesses and government. He is no longer a practicing journalist, but has stayed active in the journalism field as a board member of the Central Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. Kevin currently is an editorial specialist for SBC Advertising. He uses his reporting skills and statewide media contacts to help shape the reputations of SBC clients including Channellock, Niagara Conservation, Overhead Door, Premier Health Partners and Plaskolite.

Ryan Ankrom is a graduate of Ohio University. Ankrom also works for SBC Advertising as a senior account executive/issues management specialist. Before working at SBC, Ankrom spent five years as an assignment editor at a local TV station newsroom. He is the PR account lead for Channellock, Tyco and Scotts LawnService. Since 2006, Ryan has lent his talents to SBC brands including Armstrong, IGS Energy, Wayne-Dalton, Overhead Door and Genie.

“I really do love my job!” Those were just some of the powerful words that Andrew Yunker spoke on Monday, October 3, 2011. PRSSA was fortunate enough to have recent OU alum Andrew Yunker speak about his college experience and offer advice on how to succeed in the business world today. Yunker is a Communications Coordinator at Powers Agency, a full-service marketing firm, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. His main role is brand management, social media and blogger relations. Although Andrew has only been at Powers since June (about a week after graduation), he has already worked with clients such as Frisch’s Big Boy, First Financial Bank, Dree’s Homes and the City of Cincinnati! When asked why he chose a full-service agency, Andrew replied, “You really get a strong base, because there are clients in all industries!”

It wasn’t an accident that Andrew Yunker ended up at a firm in Cincinnati, “I knew that I wanted to work in Cincinnati, so all of my internships were in Cincinnati. I targeted the city, so that I knew a lot of people already.” In his opinion, “It’s not only what you know, it’s often who you know.” He said that networking is probably the most important thing that you can do. It is vital to “keep relationships going, because they will pay off in the long run.”

Andrew also had a lot of great interview tips to share! His first main point was to have Respectful Confidence: to be confident but not cocky. Secondly he said to always be Business Professional. Another great tip was to only have a ONE-Page Resume. Lastly, Andrew made a key point to say that personal “Thank You” notes are important. Adding that personal touch shows that you took the time and effort to establish a relationship with the company.

Andrew told everyone at the meeting to take pride in being a Scripps student and an Ohio Bobcat saying, “The Scripps name in itself means a lot to employers and holds high standards.” He also said that the experience and involvement that we are able to get on campus in organizations like PRSSA will be of tremendous value.

Ohio University Study Abroad Fair
The Office of Education Abroad is hosting its annual Study Abroad Fair on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Baker Center Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public and provides attendees ready access to representatives from Ohio University study abroad programs, OHIO affiliates and other providers all in the same room. In celebration of the event, ten T-shirts will be given away to attendees every hour. The Study Abroad Fair gives students a chance to speak with program directors and past participants as well as take advantage of on-the-spot advising with trained study abroad advisers. Information about financial aid, scholarships and passports will also be available.With hundreds of programs in more than 40 countries, attendees are exposed to the endless possibilities to study, teach, work, volunteer and intern abroad. Last year, more than 700 students traveled abroad through Ohio University, many of whom began their journey at the Study Abroad Fair.

Habitat for Humanity 5k Run
The 3rd annual 5k Run for Cover will be held on November 5 at Noon at Ping. Habitat for Humanity is enlisting the help of student organizations- in exchange for pre-registering at least 10 members of any organization, that group will get the organization's name on the back of the event t-shirts. Scholarship Money for MarCom Students
The American Advertising Federation-Cleveland's Education Foundation is now offering more than $230,000 in scholarship money for advertising, marketing, communication and graphic design students. To be eligible a student must be an Ohio resident qualifying for in-state tuition at an Ohio college or university, be pursuing a bachelor's or associate's degree in the communication or marketing field, carry a full course-load and hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale), and currently be in his/ her senior or junior year (graduating between 2012 and 2013). Happy week four everyone! For our third meeting we will be joined via Skype by OU alum Kate Simpson. Kate is a Senior Account Executive from MWW group. She will be speaking to us about working in a big city and the difference between working at a boutique firm vs. a full-service agency.

Kate has a diverse background in consumer lifestyle marketing. She has worked on many campaigns and projects for clients, such as Macys Merchandising Group, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, Sara Lee’s Hillshire Farm, Frontier Airlines and Nutrisystem.

In addition to media relations, Kate specializes in event management and celebrity wrangling. She has had experience planning and executing national tours, product launches and markets, fashion shows and more.

Three ways to 'go the extra mile' in preparation for the job market

As I was reflecting on this blog and my time at the Ohio University Scripps School of Journalism nearly 20 years ago (how can that be??!!), I couldn’t help but think how blessed I was and still am.

First of all, to be able to graduate from a program that is widely regarded as one of the best in the nation was an amazing gift that provides a strong network and great head start to any hard working Scripps School graduate.

However, that doesn’t mean you can just sit around and a job will come. There’s still plenty of work to be done to separate yourself from the crowd of other graduates that will soon be flooding the job market.

I’d recommend focusing on three areas to go the extra mile:

1. PRSSA: Once a week, I’d go over to the Scripps School for our weekly PRSSA meetings and would get involved as much as I could. But today, the PRSSA group at OU is on steroids! You guys have your own PR firm, have great guest speakers every week and have built up an amazing program. When I glance over resumes, the PRSSA members – especially those with leadership roles – are definitely the ones that stand out.

2. Internships: I know it’s been drilled into your head, but in order to land a job in a timely fashion out of college, you must have multiple internships that have given you the ability to build a nice portfolio of writing samples, news clips, social media strategies and more. Plus, it’s always handy to have a great professional reference from your internship boss.

3. Charitable/Non-profit work: Here’s my PSA on giving back…no matter what position you find yourself in life – whether you’re a busy career professional, a homemaker or a student, it’s important to make your mark on this world. Find at least one charity/non-profit that you’re passionate about and volunteer on a regular basis – it can be to help with public relations needs OR it can just be to lend a hand. Personally, I allocate a certain amount of my firm’s time to some key non-profits in Central Ohio; I have served on several non-profit boards; and I volunteer as a tutor at a Columbus Public School on a weekly basis. When I see volunteer service on someone’s resume it definitely sets him or her apart.

So those are some quick thoughts off the top of my head on how to best position you for success in securing a great job after college! With that being said, please do make sure to enjoy this time and don’t stress out about finding that perfect job. If you’ve put effort into it, it will come!

Tips from PRSSA Advisor Dan Farkas

Dan Farkas is returning to advise the OU PRSSA chapter for his second year. “I had very high expectations when I got here and the students have surpassed them.” Farkas said. “I am fascinated to see where it goes this year.”

Farkas, an OU alum, returned to teach in the journalism school in 2010. He had been in touch with Dr. Stewart about teaching ever since he had graduated and it was a “no-brainer” when it came to choosing his alum a mater. “It's one of the top ten best J-Schools in the country, so there was not a lot of thought required when the [teaching] opportunity was here at my perspective,” he said.

Teaching is in Farkas’ blood: his mother taught for 30 years. Teaching is second nature to him from his other jobs too though. “At my other jobs when I have trained people, I have always guided people,” Farkas said. “The idea of trying to help people and be an instructor was never new to me.”

When the opportunity to be the advisor of PRSSA came up, he said it seemed like a natural fit. “I still do video, web, print and agency. I have a perspective on what PR’s role is in all of this," he said. "I feel fortunate enough to be able to help students out and say I can help them practically.”

When asked what he likes best about being an advisor Farkas says “there is a sense of pride to see the intrinsic connections and benefits. That you are able to impact lives and see how people have grown throughout the quarter.” He used hashtags as an example, saying that at the beginning of the quarter only one or two people were doing it and at the end of the quarter over half of the students were.

Being the PRSSA advisor and a bobcat, Farkas can relate very well to students.

For underclassmen who are unsure if they should join PRSSA Farkas has two reasons to consider joining.

#1 There is a reason OU is one of the top 10 J-Schools. PRSSA is a way to develop yourself in your major without waiting for your major classes. For example, Farkas said, “I got to campus on a Friday and I did one of my first radio broadcasts out ACRN on Monday.”

#2 Clubs, like PRSSA, help you find a mentor to guide you. “I am still in touch with my mentor from ACRN today,” Farkas said.

Farkas also has 3 tips for J-School seniors.

#1 Enjoy the experience: you don’t replicate Senior year.

#2 Realize that you are on the clock 24/7, so if you are posting things online, be responsible.

#3 The job hunting process begins now. Relationships that you build in October could make a huge impact in the jobs you are looking for in May. So have fun, be responsible and be aware.

Why am I such a big advocate for PRSSA membership? It leads to jobs! Years ago when I was sitting in Scripps 111, listening to an impressive PRSSA speaker who told us to keep in touch with her, I thought “I really like this lady. I think I will.” I wrote the speaker, Tammy, short e-mails every few months to just check in and keep the relationship going. When it was around graduation time, I jotted her a note letting her know I was looking for a job. Well, she had just taken a job at a new company so she was quick to recommend me to her boss. I got hired!

Then I became one of the PRSSA speakers you see on Monday nights. I, too, would tell students to keep in touch. One student who took me up on my offer was a girl named Katie. We became close friends over the years, and when she was about to graduate, I had just taken a new job, so I recommended her to the same boss Tammy had recommended me. She got the job!

As an active PRSSA member, then PRSA member, I have gotten many jobs over the years that have been referrals from other association members. The network and friendships you are able to build through this great organization is unbelievably helpful. I can think of no career decision I have made that has been more directly beneficial to me than membership in PRSSA and PRSA. My membership has opened more doors than I know I ever could have managed on my own. PR people are giving souls, quick to offer help and advice. They are strong advocates for one other.

So the next time a good speaker asks you to keep in touch, DO IT! You don’t have to have anything important to say; just check in. Talk about your classes. Ask about their job. Just stay in touch. You will never know how or when it will pay off, but trust me that it will.

How PRSSA has helped you: Because of PRSSA I feel like I am ahead of the "class." During class I can tell that I understand the industry better and have more experience than those who don't attend meetings. Also, after attending PaRtners conference my sophomore year, I heard and stayed in contact with the PR and Marketing Director at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair and now this summer I am one of three interns. (Pretty good deal, I'd say!)

Why you chose to attend OU: I felt at home when I walked on the bricks and fell in love with the beauty of the campus. Not to mention, it's a fantastic school and one of the best journalism schools in the nation.

Your favorite J-school professor: I really don't think I could pick just one. I love how all of the professors are helpful and push you to go the extra mile. Bill Reader is so passionate about journalism and is genuine about it. Dan Farkas is educated on how to work in public relations and is knowledgeable on how to have better connections with the media. Aimee Edmonson made Communication Law a really interesting class.

Your favorite J-School class: Magazine feature writing with Ellen Gerl because the writing style was so much different than what I have been used to since I came to college. It's refreshing to be able to write freely. She's an incredible writer and I LOVED the articles we read and our assignments.

PR experience: In Athens, I work for Undergraduate Admissions as an online and print communications writer and editor and get to write various items that go out to prospective students. I've developed content for email campaigns, eletronic newsletters and print materials. I also produce and edit FlipCamp videos that go on their YouTube page. This summer, I am a PR and Marketing coordinator at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair. I work closely with 7 media partners so there is a lot of media relations. I also write press releases and write for their blog. I completely designed and contributed writing to the media guide.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Get involved!

Interesting fact about yourself: I was prom queen.

Hobbies: When I have free time I enjoy hanging out with my loved ones, watching movies, reading, going hiking and just enjoying life!

How PRSSA has helped you: It has helped me gained confidence as a PR student as well as expand my knowledge on all things PR. Additionally it has helped me develop networking skills, which have even led to internship opportunities.

Why you chose to attend OU: Scripps has a great program, the campus is beautiful and it is the perfect distance from home.

Your favorite J-school professor: Ed Simpson- he was actually a grad student not a professor but I had him for J233 we always had great class discussions and he made it fun.

PR experience: Summer internship at Lesic & Camper Communications, Winter Intercession internship at Hamilton Local Schools, virtual internship with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Columbus Affiliate, currently a summer internship at the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau. Upcoming winter quarter internship with the OU Alumni Association. ImPRessions: one year as associate on Athens Transit, one year as associate on Bob Evans, one year as account exec for College Book Store, currently Account Exec for ROTC.

Favorite OU memory: My favorite memory is my study abroad trip from Mexico. It's one of the best things I've ever done and I will never forget it.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Make sure to step out of your comfort zone and get involved with as much as possible. Also, try to study abroad, whether for 2 weeks, a quarter or a whole year- there is financial aid available so don't use that as an excuse!

Interesting fact about yourself: I have traveled to 7 countries (Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, China, Canada and Mexico)

Hobbies: Reading, playing water polo/ swimming, and being outdoors.

Favorite Athens eatery: I'd have to say Courtside- they're pizza is my favorite and everything is delicious! And slice night is ALWAYS a good idea.

Where you see yourself in 10 years: Generally I answer this that I'd like to work in international PR somewhere (DC preferably) and be super happy with my job, maybe married maybe not- not too preoccupied with that. However after this summer I'm thinking I might like to work in the tourism/ hospitality industry. Either way I will be doing something that makes me happy surrounded by people who care about me!

Why you wanted to be on the executive board: In only one year PRSSA has helped me so much. It has given me an opportunity to network with professionals, meet other PR students and has given me a mentor. The exec board this past year accomplished so much and I really looked up to them. This year I want to help the underclassmen as much as the exec board helped me. I want to contribute my skills and really make PRSSA as great as possible for all members.

How PRSSA has helped you: PRSSA has helped me in so many ways. I switched my Journalism sequence from Broadcast News to Public Relations in the beginning of my Junior year and PRSSA was one of the first ways that I got involved. I was able to network with other students and professionals, learn more about the PR world and write for the chapter newsletter. One of the greatest things that PRSSA did for me was give me a mentor. My mentor really guided me throughout this past year, taught me to go for every opportunity and is always there when I need advice. The mentor/mentee program is so great and I know that my mentor and I will always stay in touch.

Why you chose to attend OU: When I stepped foot on OU’s beautiful campus I looked at my dad and said, “this is where I’m going!” When I was accepted into Scripps my decision was only further finalized!

Your favorite J-school professor: Dr. Kalyango is my favorite J-School professor! I took J352 with Dr. Kalyango and he taught me so much. He is knowledgable, intelligent and really pushed his students to be good journalists and achieve as much as they could. After completing his class I had a sense of accomplishment.

PR experience: I completed an news and social media internship with an online magazine called thecelebritycafe.com; I completed a public relations internship with a private school in Akron, OH called the Lippman School; I just completed an AMAZING public relations internship with the Miss Universe Organization in NYC; this past year I was an account member on the OU Performing Arts Series account for ImPRessions; this coming year I am one of the Account Executives for OU Performing Arts Series.

Favorite OU memory: Homecoming weekend every year!

Advice to incoming Freshman: You only have four years here and it goes by fast so don’t be afraid to get involved or apply to things.

Why you wanted to be on the executive board: PRSSA is a great organization filled with great people and is a way to network and further yourself and your knowledge within public relations. I've been a member of PRSSA for the past three years and have seen and experienced great passion for the field by other people, which really has motivated me. I've always wanted to be on the exec board to be a part of that network, to help and learn from others throughout the organization.

How PRSSA has helped you: PRSSA has helped me meet fellow classmates I may never have met and listen to speakers from all over the country discuss their professions. Through these connections, I've been able to find internships or jobs that I heard via word of mouth, and, most importantly, it has allowed me to develop some great friendships.

Why you chose to attend OU: The only reason why I came to OU was because of Scripps. I was set on attending Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until I heard I was accepted into the Scripps school. I have two sisters who are OU alumni and they talked me into heading to southern Ohio for four years to study journalism.

Your favorite J-school professor: Professor Pittman is my favorite professor by far, although he's not a PR professor. I had him for J221 Graphics of Communication and he was a great teacher and the nicest person. Since taking that class, I feel comfortable meeting him in his office to talk about school and internships or ask advice. He is very personable.

PR experience: I completed a PR/ Marketing internship with Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland, where I helped organize an annual event for orthopedic doctors called The International Spine Conference. I completed a media relations position last summer with a political campaign for Ohio's 10th congressional district. I completed an internship with Fairview Hospital in Cleveland where I worked in the marketing department. This year, I will be working in PR with the City of Athens Chamber of Commerce and I will be a student freelance writer with OU Communications and Marketing.

Favorite OU memory: Standing on Court Street and celebrating the night OU's basketball team beat Georgetown in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. My passion for the school was further substantiated at that point.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Take everything one step at a time. If you don't know what sequence within journalism is right for you, don't worry you have plenty of time to figure it out and you're further ahead than most because you're in Scripps.

Interesting fact about yourself: On my 16th birthday, I attended a live recording of Late Night with Conan O'Brien where I partook in a crowd skit. Conan spotted my red hair before the show started and included me in his warm-up comedy skit, which later ensued in me being in the crowd skit. I shook Tom Hanks and John Voight's hand, and Max Weinberg (the drummer in the East Street Band) gave me his drumsticks which I still have to this day.

Hobbies: Playing guitar, snowboarding, reading, working on and piloting my dad's boat during summers

3 Reasons to Consider PRSSA by PR pro Rebecca Odell

I’ll admit: When I walked into my first PRSSA meeting as a Kent State University sophomore, I was incredibly hesitant about becoming involved.

I loved my public relations courses and was eager to learn more about my future profession, but I wasn’t sure if PRSSA would be a complete waste of my time. Let’s face it: We all know time is a precious commodity when you’re balancing classes, homework and a part-time job while still trying to manage a social life.

Now that I’m a college graduate and young professional, I can look back and confidently say that PRSSA involvement was one of the most fulfilling aspects of my college career. The experiences PRSSA presented, paired with the personal and professional relationships I formed, still benefit me today.

So if you’re hesitant about jumping on the PRSSA bandwagon, here are three tidbits I think you should keep in mind:

The networking opportunities PRSSA provides are second to none.

I am still amazed by the networking opportunities PRSSA membership provided me throughout my college career. Not only did I have a chance to chat with local professionals, I also had an opportunity to network with future young professionals across the United States.

Networking events helped me form friendships (in fact, two of my fellow PRSSA members became my college roommates) and led to incredible internship opportunities. And believe me: You’ll need internship experience if you want to stay competitive in this economy.

PRSSA lets you see what working in public relations is really like.

When I was a student, I remember sitting in class and wondering what it was like to work in public relations.

I wondered, “Will I get paid to sit around and write case studies all day? If I worked at an agency, what would my daily duties entail?”

PRSSA gave me the opportunity to hear from PR professionals and find out what their day-to-day responsibilities were really like. This helped me determine what aspects of the field best fit my strengths and what types of internships I should pursue.

It’s not just for PR majors, either.

One of the major misconceptions about PRSSA is that it’s only open to public relations majors.

As technology continues to play a leading role in the way we communicate, public relations, marketing and advertising are playing integral roles. This means students from a wide range of disciplines can benefit from the opportunities PRSSA offers. Whether you’re studying public relations, marketing, advertising, journalism or even sociology/psychology, you could certainly benefit from this organization.

Why you wanted to be on the executive board: My main reason for getting involved with the PRSSA exec board was to gain the experience. We have one of the best chapters as far as learning opportunities go, and I know that from a non-exec board perspective. To move up in the organization gives me more personal growth opportunities, whether that be networking with professionals more closely or just simply networking with other exec board members. We also get the opportunity to manage certain aspects of the organization. Being on the exec board helps us learn management styles, discover beneficial techniques in PR, expand our network and have an overall awesome experience.

How PRSSA has helped you: So far, I've mostly gained a greater understanding of how to operate in the PR world. As a freshman and sophomore, I went on trips with the upperclassmen, like the agency tours and regional conferences. Not only did I learn from those experiences, but I was able to ask the juniors and seniors informal questions that I would have been too afraid to ask professionals. For example, when I have a question about how to contact an organization about internships or even just how to word a thank-you, I've always been able to turn to upperclassmen PRSSA members for advice.

Why did you chose to attend OU: The JSchool, of course!

Your favorite J-school professor: Although now he only teaches a few classes here and there, Director Stewart is probably my favorite professor. I was in the first group of the JFreshmen Newsroom and I've worked with him through ImPRessions on the JSchool account. At first, his experience is kind of intimidating, but he is a very down-to-earth professor and is great for advice. I also really appreciate how he stays connected with students.

Your favorite J-School class: As nerdy as it sounds, I really liked precision language! I liked learning phrases and words that are often misused. It has definitely improved my writing, too.

PR experience: After my freshman year, I interned at Pepperidge Farm as the Operations Intern. It was more business-related experience, but I was able to pitch ideas to top management in a formal setting. I've been very involved with ImPRessions, on the College Book Store account, the Scripps School account and AE for AVW Productions. This coming year, I will be a PACE employee for the Office of Career Services as the Special Events Coordinator. I will also be interning with the Ohio University Alumni Association as the Regional Programming Intern.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Ask questions! Even the ones that you think are "stupid." And don't underestimate yourself or your experience. If you're motivated to do something, do it!

Interesting fact about yourself: I have a total of seven siblings.

Hobbies: I really like to sing and be crafty!

Favorite Athens eatery: The Diner on Court St.

Where you see yourself in 10 years: Working at a PR agency or in the PR department of an organization in Columbus, and married with a baby, I hope! As much as I'd love to live somewhere warmer, most of my family is in Ohio and I don't think I could leave them.

PRSSA National Conference: October 14-18 in Orlando, Florida!

Last year, I attended the PRSSA 2010 National Conference in Washington, DC. As a sophomore, I learned valuable information about the public relations industry and I was able to develop and structure my skills. From professional speakers to internship advice, nothing like this can be found and replicated on a college campus.

Each year, the PRSSA National Committee hosts a conference for all PRSSA chapters across the country. This year, the PRSSA 2011 National Conference will be held October 14-18, 2011 in Orlando, Florida. This year’s theme is Perception Is Reality: Inspiring Effective Communication and will feature “notable speakers and ground-breaking sessions that will educate and inspire present and future young professionals to learn more about the public relations industry.”

Program:

The conference includes speakers, networking events, panels and roundtable discussions. Beginning each morning between 8 and 9 am, the conference runs on the hour, every hour, offering opportunities to engage all types of audiences. Be willing to listen and interact with speakers, professionals and other students!

Networking:

The National Conference is a prime opportunity to network with PR professionals and industry leaders. The National Committee encourages students to bring copies of their resumes and even business cards, in hopes that you begin to build lifelong relationships on both a personal and business level.

Registration:

Registration for the PRSSA 2011 National Conference is simple. Visit the conference website to register online, by fax or by mail. Deadline to register ends September 12^th, 2011.

In the past, individuals interested in attending national conference have been responsible for the registration fees. The full registration cost for PRSSA members is $295, which includes all of the events during the conference. If you are unable to attend the full conference, single day sessions and events cost $170.

Why you chose to attend OU: I first looked at it because of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism reputation and then I fell in love with the community quickly after I visited.

Your favorite J-school professor: Prof. Dan Farkas because he inspires students to find the most useful, practical and latest techniques to PR and journalism.

Your favorite J-School class: Farkas' Media Relations and Publicity course because I was constantly writing notes not only for his class but for my student organization and personal uses -- he has the best tips!

PR experience: Worked part-time at Razorfish (global digital agency), Modern Trade Communications (online industry publication) and Wrigleyville Magazine (monthly online magazine); interned at FD (PR consulting firm), Comcast SportsNet Chicago (regional sports network) and BENNU Legal (nonprofit legal firm); Student intern at OHIO Athletic Department, College of Education and Human Services, Multicultural Center and Office of Education Abroad.

Favorite OU memory: It depends! In PRSSA, I have to say #JeffHirzapalooza but otherwise, spring quarter every year.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Test the waters in everything you're interested in because getting involved early makes it easier to find your path in college.

Why you wanted to be on the executive board for PRSSA: I want to give back to students what PRSSA has given me, to allow them to try to figure out what PR is or what it means to them. You can't really explain what public relations is in lamen terms; however giving the student the ability to hear testimonials from PR professionals and go on network trips allows them to see what the field is like and how they can prepare themselves for a future career. I want to help serve as a mentor to undergraduate students and help them get the most out of PRSSA, Scripps and OU in general :)

How PRSSA has helped you: PRSSA has helped me in so many ways! First, it has given me contacts-any internships or PACE position that I have had has happened because of contacts that I met through PRSSA. Second, networking trips such as Chicago, New York City and Washington D.C. National Conference. All of these have allowed me to realize that public relations is what I want to do when I graduate and also allowed me to realize the depth of the industry. Third, friends because a lot of my closest friends are in PRSSA :)

Why you chose to attend OU: I knew that OU had a great journalism program, however when I visited I was SOLD! The beauty of the campus is hard to beat. I loved how close all of the campus buildings were, Court Street was a big seller as well. Also, I loved how there is a big local (organic foods, sustainability efforts, etc. ) movement in Athens :)

Your favorite J-school professor: Bill Reader! He tells it like it is…He's hilarious, too! I appreciate how he was very candid about the field of journalism. There is definitely no 'sugar coating' with Reader.

PR experience: I have worked for PACE: University of Communications and Marketing, student writer; Ohio University Office of Education Abroad, peer advisor. I also have had experience interning for Nationwide Children's Hospital and O'Blenness Memorial Hospital.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Have fun, join GLC, study abroad, don't stress and don't be afraid to try as many things as you can!!

Interesting fact about yourself: I met Harrison Ford the summer after my senior year at a steakhouse in Alaska. I am distantly related to Woodrow Wilson.

Hobbies: Dancing, working out, scrap booking, going to concerts, traveling

Favorite Athens eatery: Casa Nueva!! :)

Where you see yourself in 10 years:I see myself (or maybe this is more of a dream, lol) living out west somewhere (northern CA, Arizona, Denver...) in a bungalow-esque house (with a nice view of the mountains in backyard) with a Mini Cooper and a fruit/vegetable/meditation garden. I hope to be working in PR either at a hospital or agency (preferably for healthcare/non-profit clients) and teaching yoga on the side! Perhaps married by then as well, we'll see though; I still have a lot of traveling to do!

Why you wanted to be on the Executive Board: PRSSA has been such a huge part of my college career - being on exec board gives me a chance to give back to the group and (hopefully) help make it even more successful. I have been on exec since the end of my sophomore year, and I want to continue to help others get as much out of PRSSA as I have.

How PRSSA has helped you: I skipped this question and came back to it because I just don't know where to start. PRSSA has been the closest thing to pressing an "easy" button that I've had in college. I'm not saying you join, sit back and let the job offers come in when you graduate, but this organization puts all of the resources you could possibly need to be successful at your fingertips. All you have to do is utilize them. Most importantly, PRSSA has introduced me to some of my closest friends and to a group of professional and student mentors that I don't think I could have survived college without. In addition speakers have given me real-world advice and tips that you simply can't learn from a book.

Favorite J-school professor: I have yet to meet a J-school professor I don't adore - they are all insanely qualified and interested in their students. Dan Farkas is a great example. First, he's an incredibly down-to-earth guy and definitely won't just tell you what you want to hear. Who better to learn from then someone who is currently in the PR field at the same time he is teaching? I loved how he changed lesson plans based on news events or a new PR trend he learned right before class. If only I had a dollar for every time I read something or did something and thought "Dan was right about this..." Also, although I've never had class with him, Dr. Kalyango is definitely one of the most impressive individuals I have ever met.

PR experience: This summer, I am interning in the Corporate Communications sector of FD in Chicago. Last summer, I worked for Relix, a New York City-based music magazine. As an editorial intern, I did show reviews, album reviews, artist profiles and feature stories, and I got to go to three music festivals and tons of concerts. I still do some freelance work for Relix and even worked at a three-day Dave Matthews Band fest this past weekend for them. At school, I've worked as a public relations/communications assistant for both the Office of Education Abroad and the Advancement Department. Next year, I will be the editor of Scripps Notes. I've worked as both a supervisor and an account executive for ImPRessions, and I write for Brick Beats magazine.

Advice to incoming Freshman: Keep your door open in the residence halls; and take me to Shively :)

Interesting fact: Last summer, I did work on the side for Bob Weir, the guitarist from the Grateful Dead.

Janelle Huelsman joined Fahlgren Mortine as an account associate in 2010. She provides media relations, social media outreach and event management for a variety of business-to-business, healthcare and non-profit clients, including Cardinal Health, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and Franklin Park Conservatory. Prior to joining Fahlgren, she was a public relations intern for Ohio University Communications & Marketing and SBC Advertising, the public relations director for Scoop08.com, and a public advocacy intern for the National Coalition on Healthcare. She is an active member of Central Ohio Public Relations Society of America and a former member of the Public Relations Student Society of America’s 2009-2010 National Committee. Janelle holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and a certificate from the Ohio University Global Leadership Center. She currently resides in Columbus, where she is an active volunteer for Local Matters.

Courtney Cooper grew up in Grove City and Marysville, OH, before moving down south to Ohio University. After discovering her love for PR, Courtney was accepted to the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. From there she landed several beneficial internships and continued to expand her professional network. This included a trip to work oversees in London, England. Upon returning to the states, Courtney contacted Amy Marshall, Webbed Marketing’s COO, about her business, and the rest is history.

Courtney Walker is currently the Social Media Account Coordinator for RMD Advertising in Columbus. She works mainly with new and emerging food brands and manages 19 Twitter and Facebook accounts for clients on a daily basis. In her free time, she enjoys running. She recently ran the Cincinnati Marathon 3 weeks ago. She is currently deciding where her next marathon will be and wants to run one in every state before she turns 40. In the fall, she is moving to Chicago to pursue an amazing opportunity that has been presented to her to become a part of the team at Red Frog Events (redfrogevents.com) as an Intern/Events Coordinator. She will be working with a team to help plan three different, fun and unconventional races worldwide - Warrior Dash, BeachPalooza, and The Great Urban Race.

Alyssa Mehling is a Market Director for Moody•Nolan, an architecture, engineering and interior design firm in Columbus, Ohio. Alyssa leads social media efforts and drives business for the healthcare and education studios. She is a 2010 graduate of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and has had internship experience in non-profit and agency PR.

Intern, 2 By 2012
The student will support the 2 BY 2012 program, one of the main initiatives of Consider Biking. The goal of this program is to increase utilitarian bicycle riding for commuting to work, school or for errands. The student should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be familiar with bicycling and, more importantly, be willing to learn about bicycling and its positive impact on company health care costs, the environment and on community development. The student should also be willing to bicycle during the work day for work related meetings and events when appropriate.

Steven is an instigator and proud of it. It is in fact, his title at Hyperdisk Marketing where he handles new business development, social media, account management, and marketing responsibilities. He resists following the crowd and seeks new and innovative solutions to the most difficult marketing challenges. He has over 25 years’ experience driving strategic growth and product visibility for leading nonprofit, corporate, media and digital marketing organizations with heavy emphasis on hospitality vertical. He is highly competitive, passionate, persuasive and articulate; experienced in marketing, public relations, partnership building and product management.

Steven has many interests in addition to marketing that include being an Iron Man triathlete, a Registered Yoga Teacher, and IFTA certified Indoor Biking Instructor. Zachary Bingham, VP/Public Relations Director.

Zack oversees public relations efforts for all SBC clients, and manages the agency public relations team. He is a graduate of the internationally recognized Buckley School of Public Speaking and holds a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University’s Scripps School of Journalism. He has driven successful public relations campaigns for Fortune 1000 companies including Armstrong, Elmer’s, TYCO, Wayne-Dalton and Channellock. Zachary has been with SBC Advertising for 7 years.

Mary Garrick, Account Executive, Public Relations. Mary plays a key role supporting consumer, health care and retail clients at SBC Advertising. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio’s University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and Honors Tutorial College. Jeff Hirz is the marketing coordinator at the Great Lakes Science Center, the premier science-education attraction at North Coast Harbor in Cleveland, Ohio.

Jeff moved back to his hometown of Cleveland in October 2008 after a post-graduate internship with SBC Advertising in Columbus. Jeff’s work at the Science Center has focused primarily on telling the dynamic story of the institution through a variety of channels, including: extensive media relations efforts; active involvement on social media platforms; pursuing strategic advertising opportunities; establishing effective and mutually beneficial community partnerships with key Cleveland organizations and implementing a broad e-marketing campaign.

Next Monday, May 2, Jeff will pursue another professional opportunity with the inbound marketing agency, PR 20/20.

Tammy Monroe, APR, Vice President, Director of Public Relations. has nearly 20 years of public relations experience and leads communications planning, thought leadership development and word of mouth marketing strategy for Northlich’s award-winning public relations team. While at a global business-to- business agency, Tammy managed communications programs for a portfolio of clients including Hobart Corporation, where she spearheaded outreach efforts to restaurants, grocery stores, healthcare facilities, lodging and casinos and educational institutions. Tammy also worked for a Columbus-based public affairs agency and served a variety of corporate and public-sector clients. Tammy serves on the Young Professionals Board of the Children’s Home of Cincinnati. Katy Gariby

Katy Garibay, Senior Word of Mouth Marketing Strategist. Katy has a passion for reaching consumers through non-traditional mediums. She is an agency thought leader in digital marketing and experienced in public relations, account management and social media. But, her expertise is in word of mouth initiatives that lead to behavior change. As part of the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation’s stand team, Katy managed outreach and interactive work for PRoject U, an intercollegiate competition that challenged Ohio’s college students to design and implement a tobacco counter-marketing campaign on campus. A member of the Word of Mouth Marketing Association and the Public Relations Society of America, Katy creates and implements word of mouth strategies for clients including social media, grassroots and influencer marketing for retail and consumer clients like White Castle, Long John Silver’s and American Greetings. In her spare time, Katy participates in the mentoring program for Oyler Elementary and volunteers for the non-profit organization American Heritage Girls where she has led social media workshops and emceed National conferences. Katy is a graduate from Ohio University.

Troy Kirkpatrick is the president of CommHa (pronounced comma), a communication and humor consulting agency located in Columbus, Ohio. In this role he counsels clients on internal and external communication issues to help define, defend and enhance their reputation. He can talk to squirrels, run a 3-minute mile and is the reigning champion of the Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. He also thinks he is funnier than he actually is.

Prior to going out of his mind, throwing caution to the wind and starting up his own agency, Kirkpatrick was vice president of Public Relations for Cardinal Health, a Fortune 20 global health care services company. At Cardinal Health,
he led external communication for the company, including proactive and reactive media relations, financial communication, executive speech writing, social media and issues management. In this role, he also became close, personal friends with Geraldo Rivera.

Before joining Cardinal Health in 2006, Kirkpatrick was the global communication manager for GE Water, a $3 billion business unit of the General Electric Company, overseeing all internal and external communication. Kirkpatrick previously served as global communication manager for GE Global Research and led external and internal communication for GE’s research centers in Niskayuna, N.Y., Munich, Germany, Bangalore, India and Shanghai, China.

Prior to GE, Kirkpatrick served as the assistant press secretary for Ohio Governor Bob Taft and held communication positions with Lord, Sullivan & Yoder (now known as Fahlgren Mortine) and OhioHealth. Kirkpatrick serves on the board of directors for the Ohio University Alumni Association and the Marketing Committee for the Simon Kenton Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. He lives with his wife, Lynn, and his three boys Ian, Nate and Quinn, who are an endless source of humor.

Aaron Brown

In his more than nine years with Fahlgren Mortine marketing and communications, Aaron has specialized in business-to-business campaigns featuring creative media relations and social media programs. His work within the business-to-business arena has primarily been focused on supply chain, material handling and manufacturing markets. Most recently, he led or supported integrated marketing programs for Cardinal Health, Crown Equipment, Emerson Network Power, Exel and FIAMM. Media relations campaigns under his leadership have earned the central Ohio PRSA top honor for the year's outstanding media relations program three of out of the last four years (2007, 2009, 2010).

As managing director of the Cleveland office, Aaron is playing a leadership role in the alignment of account management and reporting processes, overseeing account staffing and support, and leveraging the expertise and specialties of the various Fahlgren Mortine disciplines to ensure robust program development and overall client satisfaction.

In 2003, central Ohio PRSA recognized him as the organization's "Rising Star," which honors an outstanding professional with less than three years of experience. Aaron earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. The School of Journalism faculty named him the Outstanding Graduating Senior for both the public relations sequence and the School of Journalism overall.
